Rather than weed out people who don't posses some arbitrary list of prerequisites, compelling career messages are used to excite and attract the best.

"Because the Performance-based Hiring system does differ from traditional recruiting and hiring processes, questions arise as to whether employers can adopt Performance-based Hiring and still comply with the complex array of statutes, regulations, and common law principals that regulate the workplace. The answer is yes.
  
In particular: 

  • A properly prepared performance profile can identify and document the essential functions of a job better than traditional position descriptions, facilitating the reasonable accommodation of disabilities and making it easier to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar laws. 
  • Even employers that maintain more traditional job descriptions may still use performance profiles or summaries of performance profiles to advertise job openings. Employers are not legally required to post their internal job descriptions when advertising an open position. Nor is there any legal obligation to (or advantage in) posting boring ads. 
  • Focusing on Year 1 and Beyond criteria may open the door to more minority, military, and disabled candidates who have a less 'traditional' mix of experiences, thereby supporting affirmative action or diversity efforts. 
  • Conducting performance-based interviews ensures that the interviews will be structured and properly focused and minimizes the risk of an interviewer inquiring into protected characteristic. Moreover, since the performance-based interviews are conducted pursuant to a common methodology, one is assured that the candidates are being fairly compared. 
  • Performance-based interviewing promotes fair consideration of the different skills and experiences that each candidate has to offer--which is essential to promoting diversity."

With over 40 years of experience in research and the teaching of virology, he has taught workshops to undergraduates, veterinarians and postgraduate health care workers in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. His research interests are focused on persistent virus infections and haemorrhage fevers. Through his interest in vaccines he has advised the World Health Organisation, government agencies and vaccine manufacturers.Frederick A. Murphy, DVM, PhD, is professor, Department of Pathology, University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston. He holds a BS and DVM from Cornell University and a PhD from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). When I was a PhD student in virology, my intro course used an early version of Fenner's book. I thought that book was a bit weak, only because it never ever discussed anything in detail.It was recently suggested to me that I should look at the current version of Fenner, because it was "much better".That description was not incorrect. This book is now wonderful.Part I, which was the major weakness in earlier versions of the book, not only have they been greatly expanded, but the information is current. I was very impressed with chapters 10-12, on laboratory diagnosis, vaccines and antivirals, and how recent the material was.Additionally, much of part I has been updates and contains far more detail on virus structure and replication than the earlier versions with one-main caveat: excellent explanations.In all, I would highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who might have had a 'blah' feeling to earlier versions. This one is a gem.Addenda: I was asked how this book compares to Understanding Viruses by Shors. That's a tough decision. Both are excellent textbooks. The one main difference is that Fenner's book does a better job in discussing viruses than Shors' and the sections on lab methods and antivirals to me was better in Fenner's as well.

As a long-time professor of Virology, I was looking for an update to the original White and Fenner text from years ago. Thank goodness this 5th edition has arrived. It covers virology in a different way than most classes are taught these days; this text covers all the basics of the field, from structure through antiviral intervention, then devotes each chapter to a different virus family. While I treasure the 4th edition (from the 90s!), this 5th edition is well worth it.

Until this important new study, however, the nature of Koryŏ society, the stresses induced by the new legislation, and society's resistance to the Neo-Confucian changes imposed by the Chosŏn elite have remained largely unexplored.

To explain which aspects of life in Koryŏ came under attack and why, Martina Deuchler draws on social anthropology to examine ancestor worship, mourning, inheritance, marriage, the position of women, and the formation of descent groups. To examine how Neo-Confucian ideology could become an effective instrument for altering basic aspects of Koryŏ life, she traces shifts in political and social power as well as the cumulative effect of changes over time.
